Some Fun Little Magic Tricks For Children
Every party I attend I meet a number of people tell me, oh, I know a magic trick. Invariably, it’s a magic trick, perfect for children.
It doesn’t take a great deal of skill, but it still leaves children with their mouths open, eyes wide, and even some adults in amazement. So, what makes a magic trick child friendly? Well, it should have a very simple plot and reveal a big wow moment. For many children, the world is still evolving or unfurling in front of them.
For many children, seeing a big leaf is magic, or seeing a bird with lots of bright colors is magical. Magic in the form of entertainment has to be linear and offer a big wow ending. The big difference between performing magic to children and magic to adults is there needs to be a greater focus on the entertainment ride. For adults, they just want to see the wow. They want to see the big magic moment, and the laughs and the giggles and the fun. Whilst they are important, they almost come secondary.
Don't make it a long trick
For children, the magic trick in itself could not even be magic as long as they’re having fun and giggling. I’ve seen some people perform a magic trick, which isn’t even magic trick and would not even fall anybody, but they’re so caught up in the giggling and the laughing. They absolutely love it. Many years ago, I used to perform a card trick with a marionette chicken. It’s a funny looking prop and really interactive. The magic trick itself was super straightforward, super simple, and probably wouldn’t fool anybody. However, it was all wrapped up in entertainment, laughter, jokes, and silliness all by the chicken. So, a magic trick is made cake friend by making it fun and full of giggles and laughter. I mentioned before how I used a marionette chicken to create that fun and laughter.
But really you can use any fun prop perhaps the most popular is a plastic thumb. You can get these in most boxes of magic, and it’s a little plastic sheath, the same color of your thumb, which simply sits over your thumb.

A very simple routine is vanishing a little red handkerchief into the palm of your hand and then pulling it out behind the child’s ear or out of their clothes. If you combine this with all the fun, the laughter, and in the magic world patter, which are lines of humor, this becomes a highly entertaining and engaging routine.
You can use other props as well. Coins cards can perhaps be a little bit complicated for children, but coins are very simple, or even just a disc. You could even use a balloon, silks, and if you’re going to use cards, you can even buy some picture cards, which have pictures of rabbits and animals on them.
Any magic trick involving a puppet and the silliness that the puppet gets into is, of course, hugely entertaining as well. We can see that in the sheer longevity of Punch and Judy and other puppeteers and ventriloquist done right, even entertainers, or should I say, adults can enjoy the fun laughter and silliness. So, what’s a coin trick you could do for children? Well, you could start by buying yourself a little book, J.J Bobo’s Coin Magic is the easiest one, but if you were to just learn one magic trick, I would suggest starting by finding yourself a large two pence coin.
Take the two pence coin and then hold it in the bottom of your middle finger. Balance it on the bottom part of your middle finger, and this will allow you to hold it and then turn it upside down without it falling out. If you take this, you can pretend to put it in your other hand and close your other hand around this coin.

The Method
This makes it look like it’s been put into the other hand, when in fact it’s been retained in the hand that you’ve displayed. This can be known as a pass and can be easily searched for online. Other easy fun magic tricks involve a French drop, which you hold in your left and between your thumb and your fingers. You bring your thumb and your hand over to pick it out of this hand, but in fact, you leave it in the other hand. Again, this can be easily searched for on YouTube. So how do you get children involved in the magic? Well, one of the best ways to get people involved in the magic is by bringing children together.
Laughter is infectious and bringing everyone together so they can feed off of each other’s laughter’s and giggles is a hugely impactful way of presenting your magic. Sometimes you can perform it with their parents, but more often than not, the parents spend their time watching the magic through their children’s eyes.

Whilst this is not a bad thing, they don’t really enjoy the magic as much as they could, but does give them the opportunity to enjoy magic as a child once again, much like watching their children unwrap a Christmas present at Christmas.
Keeping them motivated or captivated is simply by including comedy, fun, giggles and laughter in the performance.
More so than that, it’s having interactive elements, whether it’s them wiggling their fingers, saying magic words, holding the props, or generally having interactivity. The more interactions the better.

Children Love To Laugh More Than Anything Else
Above all, it should be giggles. You look at children and they have massive swings from being incredibly happy and giggling too incredibly sad. If you are able to captivate their attention through laughter and giggles, you can perform pretty much any magic you want, no matter the quality. So, what are some rules about performing in front of children? Well, first of all, the magic has to be easy to understand. It has to be clean, so nothing rude or blue or swearing. It has to be lots of fun and entertaining. It has to be logical, and it has to have high levels of interactive. Sometimes you can hire a professional closeup magician such as Duncan to perform a children’s show. This is rare, but Duncan does have a children’s show he used to perform.
This is a great way to keep the children entertained when you’re having your speeches at a wedding, or there are other reasons at an event where you want to keep the children out of the way and entertain for a small length of time.
In Conclusion
Generally, Duncan performs a 40-to-45-minute show, which is highly interactive, involves puppets, coins, and lots of fun and giggles. This is rare that he performs this, but on special requests he does do this. At Parties Duncan even helps teach some of the older children a magic trick for them to perform for their friends, and sometimes even in front of the audience, making them the style of the show. Whatever you decide, magic is a family friendly style of performance. Not all children like a string quartet. Not all children like a caricaturist, but I can assure you all children like magic, never have I been to an event where there is only adults. Even older children love Duncan’s digital magic.
So, it’s always worth considering that the entertainment is family friendly and aligns with your audience. If you want to learn more about how Duncan can tailor his magic for a family-friendly audience and children, then do not hesitate to get in touch using the button below.
